Hello everybody! We are the Young Intellectual Property Advocates (YIPA) serving as the guardians of intellectual property rights for the students of the Philippine Science High School - Southern Mindanao Campus. We are working with the Innovation Technology and Support Office (ITSO) of our school. We want you to be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor — that is, your literary works and inventions!
How do we do this, you ask? Why? By assisting you in applying for intellectual property protection of course! We’ll guide you through the basics: the importance of intellectual property rights and how to obtain them.

P1A: COPYRIGHT AND PATENT APPLICATION
HOW TO APPLY
1. Email
- Get approval for copyright and/or patent filing from your research adviser.
2. Forms
- Scan this QR code to access the needed forms. Fill these up. Name the files as “[Form name] - Family names of members & adviser ].”

3. Signatures
- Get a separate scanned copy of each members’ and research adviser’s signature in JPG/PNG format. Name this as “Signature - [Family names of member/adviser]”
4. ID
- Get a scanned copy of each members’ and research adviser’s IDs along with their three (3) signatures. Merge into one PDF and name this as “Scanned IDs - [Family names of members & adviser].”
5. Review
- Have your research adviser review your forms.
6. Submit!
- Scan this QR code and submit all documents through Google Forms.

P1B: APPLICATION FORM
Once in the Google Forms, you should,
1. Email
- Make sure you’re using an active email address when filling up the form. Application confirmation receipt will be sent here.
2. ID
- Submit scanned copies of members’ and research adviser’s (if applicable) IDs and signatures.
3. Basic Info
- Fill in info such as members’ names, sections, research adviser (if applicable).

P2: REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
For copyright applicants:
Copyright Application Form
- Document containing necessary information about the class of work being copyrighted and a notarized affidavit.
For patent applicants:
Invention Disclosure Form*
- Description, purpose, and other necessary information about the invention the applicant wants to patent
*There is no need to make a request letter as ITSO PSHS-SMC will provide one
Preliminary Search Form
- A document that shows similar intellectual properties, shows a comparison between the applicant and others already filed.
For all applicants:
Form for Appointment and Authorization of Agent
- A document that gives consent to appoint and authorize an agent, acting as a middleman, that will process the necessary documents for the filing of an IP.
Photocopy of School ID + Three (3) Specimen Signatures
- This verifies the applicant’s identity.

P3A: PATENT SEARCH
Your invention must HAVE the following to be patented:
NOVELTY
- Your invention must be new. You must search a patent database to make sure that your idea hasn't been invented and patented yet.

INVENTIVE STEP
- Your invention is not an obvious development to a person skilled in the field or industry in which it is used.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY
- Your invention must be able to be produced and used in a particular industry.
NON PATENTABLE INVENTIONS
Some inventions cannot be patented, such as:
- Prior arts (any idea or invention already made available to the public)
- New discoveries of a naturally occurring substance
- Scientific theories and mathematical methods
- Methods of treatments for the human body
- New plant varieties or animal breeds or biological processes for the production of plants or animals

P3B: COPYRIGHT SEARCH
You must first identify what type of work you are copyrighting and who the owner of the work is.
ORIGINAL WORKS
- Books, pamphlets, scientific papers, screenplays, compositions, and works of art that are unique are considered original works.
DERIVATIVE WORKS
- Works that modify or incorporate other original literary or artistic works such as dramatizations, translations, adaptations, or compilations of other works such as a scientific journal.
OWNERS
- Ownership of a copyright goes to the creator of the literary work. If there are multiple authors, then they all own the copyright, unless their contributions can be used on their own, in which case the ownership of that section is claimed by the contributor.
WORKS EXEMPT FROM COPYRIGHT
Some works cannot be copyrighted, such as:
- Ideas, procedures, systems, methods, concepts, or pure data, even when expressed in a work
- Items of press information such as miscellaneous facts and news of the day
- Works of the government
- Official documents that are legislative, executive, or judicial in nature

Thus said by the Resource Speaker, PhD Linguistics candidate, Associate Professor of the University of Mindanao, and Distinguished Toastmaster Maico Demi B. Aperocho during the Digital Citizenship Webinar last Thursday, December 17, 2020 and such a statement was also the rationale why the Curriculum and Instruction Division of Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus organized and hosted the event in the first place.

If there may be important lessons that COVID-19 teaches us and forces us to do, these would be to always wash our hands and to consistently disinfect our surroundings.
It is for this reason that as part of “Pisayuda: Syensya Para sa Bayan” outreach program, the campus director of Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao tapped the janitors to make foot baths and the chemistry faculty to dilute absolute ethanol to make 70% ethyl alcohol.
CONSTRUCTING FOOT BATHS FOR BARANGAY OFFICES
The three (3) sets of foot bath constructed by the janitorial personnel were distributed to the three neighboring barangays of the campus, namely Barangay Mintal, Barangay Bago Oshiro, and Barangay Sto. Niňo last April 2, 2020 for their use to disinfect the footwear of the visitors and staff entering their premises.
Included in the package donated to each of these three barangays was one container full of chlorine – taken from the four (4) barrels of chorine donated by PSHS-SMC Batch 1993 Alumni led by Ms. Chin-Chin Nobleza, Mr. Jonah Nobleza and Ms. Dindin Velasco.
