Out of 42 participants from all over Region XI, the three Grade 11 representatives of Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao led and secured the top 3 ranks in the Regional Chemistry Olympiad held online last January 30, 2021 and thereby are the official delegates of the region for the upcoming National Chemistry Olympiad.
In the said event organized by the Integrated Chemists of the Philippines Southern Mindanao Chapter, David Mendoza ranked first followed by Taj Liam Banzon in the second place, and Elle Sue Jamayo in the third place.
Their coach, Mr. Le Grande Dolino said that he is proud that the students have done well and will move to the nationals.
He added, “More importantly, I hope our students will continue to pursue chemistry beyond high school and inspire others to do well in the field.”
The National Chemistry Olympiad will be on March 6, 2021 and the winners in the nationals will proceed to the International Chemistry Olympiad to be hosted in Japan. Ganbarou (Good luck) David, Taj, and Elle!

Grade 8 PSHSSMC student Franz Achilles Lindayag won champion in the Secondary 2 category of the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) held online last April 3, 2021.
This year's TIMO was joined by participants from 18 countries across five continents. Franz also won Gold for the individual awards in the same competition and ranked top scorer for the Philippines.
Franz frequently participates in local and international mathematics competitions.
"I could hardly believe it. I have vied for this title for three years now and finally, my hardship and perseverance paid off," Franz said in a written comment.
Franz recently won silver in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macau Greater Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad held last March.
Upon becoming champion in TIMO, Franz encouraged other students and math enthusiasts to continue doing their best.
"Keep on believing in yourself. Eventually, like me, you will reach your star. Cheers to all! We did it! Philippines conquered the world!" Franz shared.
TIMO is organized by the Olympiad Champion Education Centre (OCEC).

Franz Achilles Lindayag, a Grade 8 student from PSHSSMC, won silver (second prize award) in the 2021 Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad held online last March 21, 2021.
Franz is one of ten other silver awardees in the competition for the Secondary 2 category. The event was joined by representatives from Bulgaria, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The annual competition was organized by the Olympiad Champion Education Centre (OCEC).

Proving that PhiSciers are not just academically excellent but are also multi-talented in different abilities and skills, a Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus scholar emerged as the CHAMPION in the region-wide Ateneo de Davao University- Schools of Engineering (ADDU-SEA) Fair 2021 Sketch Wars Event held online last March 17, 2021.
Grade 12-Kelvin student Eliza Annet B. Juanitez competed virtually against other high school students from 9 different schools all over Mindanao in a challenge wherein they were given the subject “Royal Ontario Museum in Canada” on the spot for which they had to use as a guide for sketching depending on their desired perspective. They were to sketch the subject using monochrome (black and white format) for two (2) hours only. The sketch war event was part of the week-long (March 15-19, 2021) online ADDU-SEA Fair.
As relayed by the coach, Engr. Michael V. Nalitan, “I am very proud of Eliza not only because of her exceptional drawing skills but also because she remained focused and tenacious despite the event being held in time for the examination week in Pisay-SMC.”

The Philippines representatives, especially the delegates from Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus shone glisteningly amidst contenders from countries like Bulgaria, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil, Iran, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Ghana, Azerbaijan, and Australia during the recently concluded 2021 Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) Final Round.
The international contest was done through online platform EKLAVVYA last August 28, 2021 and as the result was live streamed via the YouTube channel Olympiad Champion last October 3, 2021, the following PSHS-SMC scholars were recognized for their outstanding performance:

One research group from among the grade 12 students emerged as champion in the Life Science Category and another group as runner-up in Physical Science Category during the UP Alchemes Research Fair 2021 SPITZER: Rediscovering Youth Aspirations through Scientific Ventures held last January 29-30, 2021.
Indeed, even while the global pandemic has presented a variety of challenges including conveniences of the students to conduct research in school, yet, these circumstances hardly hindered our scholars from pursuing outstanding studies and even garnering recognition for their pursuit of scientific exploration and innovations.
“I hope that these winnings will serve as an inspiration to everyone to still and all the more move student-research forward and to not be afraid to go for contingency plans given circumstances surrounding Covid-19 pandemic,” said Campus Director Jonald P. Fenecios.
The whole PSHS-SMC community is very honored and thrilled for these research winnings brought home by our Grade 12 students. Great job!

Bagwis-Agham writer and grade 10 student Jucille Kate Delos Santos emerged as champion in the Science News Writing (Filipino) category and Sci-Wings journalist and also grade 10 student Sophia Dominique Ann Samson won third place in the Science Feature Writing (English) category during the AURUM ONLINE PRESS CONFERENCE held online last February 17, 2021.
This online press conference with the theme “F𝚒𝚡𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝙲𝚘𝚖𝚖𝚜: 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚖𝚘𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚂𝚌𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 𝙹𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚖 𝙰𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚐 𝚄𝚜" was organized by the UP Biochemistry Society with the advocacy of making science journalism more fun and accessible for everyone.
The school paper advisers and coaches Mr. Johnel Lumacao and Ms. Sheila Allong were very proud of how the students excelled in the contest despite the inconvenient and challenging new normal setup of having to do the training and practice virtually.
