The Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus team composed of Derek Royce L. Burias (Grade 12 - Hertz) and Kian Andrew S. Busico (Grade 12 - Farad) knocked over the robots of other contenders during the International Robot Sumo Tournament 2021 held virtually last October 8, 2021 via YouTube Live making them the overall champion.
Coached by Computer Science and Robotics Teacher Mr. Bernard A. Beduya, Derek Royce L. Burias and Kian Andrew S. Busico battled out other robo wrestlers who were among the top 16 players from different regions in the Philippines and East Asia in this first virtual setup of such an event. The two paved their way to the championship by being able to push their opponents’ robots out of a ring round after round.

Mr. Michael A. Casas, Chief of the Student Services Division of PSHS SMC, won second place in the 3 minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition Organized by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) last August 10, 2021. The event was held via Zoom and was participated by nine participants from nine different regions in the Philippines.
The competition invites researchers with completed funded projects by DOST-PCHRD to pitch their research findings to policymakers for possible policy formulation. Mr. Casas pitched his policy proposition entitled “Positioning the Philippines as the Traditional Medicines Hub of the World with Chromatography” after completing his DOST-PCHRD funded research entitled “Chromatographic Approaches in the Analysis of Blumea balsamifera (Sambong) and Vitex negundo (Lagundi).” He remarks that through his policy proposition, the traditional medicines sector of the country will be empowered.
After landing the second spot in the contest, Mr. Casas will receive Php 20,000.00 cash from DOST-PCHRD.
