As part of the celebration of the World Space Week held from October 4 – 10 of every year, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) partnered with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region XI and the Philippine Science High School – Southern Mindanao Campus (PSHS-SMC) in promoting Space Science to Grade 10 students.

On October 6, the made a courtesy call on the PSHS-SMC Director, Dr. Jonald P. Fenecios and turned over a plaque of appreciation modelled after Diwata – 2, the Philippines’ second 50kg. Earth observation microsatellite.  On October 7, the team this time led by the PhilSA Director General, Dr. Joel Marciano Jr., conducted a lecture and demonstration on amateur radio satellite communication with Diwata – 2.

Result of the September 2022 Veterinarian Licensure Exam has been announced by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), and the Philippine Science High School – Southern Mindanao Campus is tremendously proud of its alumna, Kenny Vergara Pique for topping this year’s board exam.  A member of PSHS-SMC batch 2014 Ms. Kenny Pique took the exam from September 27 to 29, 2022 together with 928 examinees.

Campus Director Dr. Jonald Fenecios with his co-author Dr. Abraham Racca of the Adventist University of the Philippines published an article entitled “Equivalence of Lebesgue’s Theorem and Baire Characterization Theorem” that appears in Volume 28 Issue No. 2 pp. 158-163 (2022) of the Scopus-indexed Journal of the Indonesian Mathematical Society. The article provides a proof that links directly the well-known Lebesgue’s characterization of functions in the first Baire class and the Baire Characterization Theorem. Furthermore, the authors provide a new characterization of continuous functions. The journal article can be accessed at https://jims-a.org/index.php/jimsa.

When asked about the importance of research, Dr. Fenecios stressed that basic and theoretical research plays important roles in the overall scheme of technological development and innovation. According to him, pure research must be pursued since it provides necessary tools for applications to be born or discovered. It is in this light that Dr. Fenecios strongly encourages students, faculty, and personnel to engage in research and publication to cultivate the culture of innovation and to contribute to “pushing the boundaries of knowledge”.

The Philippine Science High School – Southern Mindanao Campus congratulates Mr. Johnel T. Lumacao of the Filipino Unit for the publication of his research article by the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology.
