“If frontliners will not be protected, then who will protect us?”
Thus was the drive that pushed Engr. Michael Nalitan, Art, Drafting, and Technology (ADTech) Teacher and head of the Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus Fabrication Laboratory to leave the safety of his home everyday despite the community quarantine imposed by the City Government of Davao to report to the campus and labor on making face shields and intubation boxes staring last March 23, 2020.
“I hope we can sustain as the demands for personal protective equipment (PPEs) are overwhelming. Thank God I have some help too from my fellow Pisay-SMC employees. Plus, there is constant communication from among the ADTech and DMT faculty across the different campuses under the Pisay system,” Engineer Nalitan indirectly said on his Facebook post dated March 24, 2020.
Together with Engr. Nalitan is Mr. Bernilo Alcuizar, Adminstrative Aide IV, who despite being a senior citizen still extended his help in in the 3-D machine production, in manual cutting of the materials, in setting up the shields, in assembling of the intubation box, and in packing the sets ready for delivery and shipping to different hospitals, quarantine facilities, and health centers within and outside of Davao City. Along with them is Mr. Ronald Gica, a Mathematics teacher of the campus, who likewise sacrificed his time and opportunity to stay home for the desire to protect as many medical front liners. Since March 30, 2020, Physics Teacher Engr. Cromwell Castillo and former ADtech Teacher Engr. Ace Lonzaga also volunteered to be part of the work force.
In response to the covid-19 crisis and in support to “Pisayuda: Syensya Para sa Bayan”, an outreach program of the Philippine Science High School System, Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus distributed food packs and water to the front liners working at different check points in Davao City starting last March 31, 2020.
Taking the lead in giving out the relief was Campus Director Delia Legaspino herself, who along with the school’s administrative aide/driver Mr. Alfred Saracho, intended to visit the different check point centers particularly in Barangay Sto. Niňo, Riverside, Malagos, Wangan, Subasta, Sirib, and Tagakpan (2 areas) every day until situations gets better.
